Presentation
  • Pain (aches, throbbing, night cramps, fatigue, heaviness, restlessness). Pain is usually worsened by prolonged standing, menstruation and hot weather and is relieved by elevation
  • Appearance
  • Leg swelling, usually around the ankles
  • Skin changes (pigmentation, ulceration)
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots of the surface veins, termed superficial thrombophlebitis
  • Concern about consequences of leaving the veins untreated, particularly with family history of complicated varicose veins
