Presentation
- Pain (aches, throbbing, night cramps, fatigue, heaviness, restlessness). Pain is usually worsened by prolonged standing, menstruation and hot weather and is relieved by elevation
- Appearance
- Leg swelling, usually around the ankles
- Skin changes (pigmentation, ulceration)
- Bleeding
- Blood clots of the surface veins, termed superficial thrombophlebitis
- Concern about consequences of leaving the veins untreated, particularly with family history of complicated varicose veins
